Our scholar's answer:
Imam Reza (a.s) is the eighth Imam of Shia who was born in 148 AH (765 BC) in Medina. He was named Ali and he had various nicknames which refer to his moral and wise virtues. Among his nicknames are Reza, which is his most famous nickname and means satisfaction, Sadeq (honest ), Saber (patient), and Fazel (learned). He was descended to the Holy Prophet, Muhammad (PBUH) and he was the son of the seventh Imam of Shia, Imam al-Kazim (a.s) and his mother was Najmah, who was considered an example of righteousness and wisdom. He is the father of the ninth Imam of Shia, Imam al-Javad (a.s).
He took over the position of Imamate right after the death of his father through Divine Command which was proclaimed repeatedly by the Holy Prophet and the previous Imams.
According to the Shiite belief, he possessed all of the excellence which is possible for the human being to reach just like his ancestors. He was purified by God and he never made any mistakes so did his purified forefathers.
In the period of his Imamate, he preached the Divine message and invited people to the righteousness and taught them morals and wise maxims. He was always a reached source for the seekers of knowledge as he was a huge treasure for the people seeking for moral virtues. His lifelong teachings still shine and his wise maxims still amaze the thinkers and scholars.
Imam al-Reza (a.s) was in the position of Imamate for 20 years, seventeen years in Medina and the last three years in Marw, then capital of the Abbasid caliphate because then Abbasid caliph, Ma’mun, had forced him to emigrate from Medina to Marw. Finally, he was poisoned and martyred by Ma’mun in 203 AH (817 BC) when he was 55 and he was buried in the city of Tus, Iran, which is now called Mashhad.
